Biography
Dr. James Benz, DC has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Exercise Physiologist (C-EP) for 20 years. Dr. Benz has trained professional athletes in baseball, tennis, golf, and swimming. In addition, he has experience working as an intern strength coach for a professional baseball team. The Mamaroneck and Mahopac baseball teams have benefited from his programs. Other athletes such as basketball and football players, have benefited from his strength and conditioning programs as well.
Dr. Benz is also certified with onbaseu, titleist performance institute (TPI-golf) and is a student of ELDOA for baseball. He has also formerly taught tai chi and yoga and uses some of these principles to teach a calm body and yet an aggressive and focused mind.
OnBaseU
Dr. Benz is certified with OnbaseU- Hitting. OnbaseU is dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to baseball and softball. OnbaseU has developed a fitness assessment pertaining to the game of baseball, as physical limitations may lead to an inefficient swing and injury. Exercises are then provided specific to the players needs based on the evaluation.
The organization founded by Don Slaught (a former professional baseball player) and an advisory board of industry leading experts.
ELDOA For Baseball
ELDOA FOR BASEBALL and SOFTBALL provides mobility exercises that target the body’s fascia and increases the space between specific joints of the spine resulting in a wide range of physiological benefits for any athlete including:
- A reduction of pressure on spinal discs allowing for normalization of movement
- Relief from elbow pain, back pain and shoulder tension
- Improved stride length and shoulder layback
- Better hip to shoulder separation and wrist motion
- Improved balance, stability, mobility, flexibility, proprioception and muscle tone
- Improved injury recovery and recovery time from sports activity and training
- Stress and headache reduction as well as better sleep quality
Titleist Performance Institute (TPI)
Dr. Benz is certified with TPI- Golf and Medical. TPI is the world’s leading educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing.
TPI has studied thousands of golfers ranging from the top professional to tour players to weekend enthusiasts. An incredible amount of data on players of all shapes, sizes, ages, and fitness levels has been gathered during this time. TPI has developed a fitness assessment pertaining to the game of golf, as physical limitations may lead to an inefficient swing and injury. Exercises are then provided specific to the players needs based on the evaluation.
This program was developed by founders Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips along with a 52-member advisory staff of industry leading experts.
Small Group- 2-4 athletes
Evaluation of players sport and needs assessment, ex: baseball off- season- build muscle, form technique for weight training and field work, core strength, rotational power later in off season.
Onbasu fitness assessment for baseball athletes and other exercise testing procedures for strength, power, agility, and speed depending on season and goals. Video analysis of form.
Dynamic flexibility- Sport specific active stretching/warm up.
Weight/resistance training- May include Olympic lifting for power and core strength and assistance exercises. The use of Weights, medicine balls, rubber bands, kettlebells, etc…
Power- Form and technique for plyometrics for upper and lower body.
Sprint mechanics- acceleration vs. Top speed. Resisted sprints/downhill sprints.
Agility- Emphasizing foot placement, first step. Stealing bases mechanics.
Flexibility- ELDOA as well as Yoga/Tai chi like movements.
Balance/stability- A grounded/stable athlete can generate power from the floor and reduce injury. Shoulder and hip stability exercises.
Stress management- Breathing techniques, body awareness, yoga and tai chi like movements.
Nutrition for sport- Calorie, carbohydrate, fat, and protein recommendations. Timing of eating. Nutrient dense foods. How food may effect injury and healing ability.
Large group- 5-30 athletes or more
Evaluation of players sport and needs assessment.

Calisthenics- body weight forms of resistance and may include the use of rubber bands
Power- Form and technique for plyometrics for upper and lower body.
Sprint mechanics- acceleration vs. Top speed.
Agility- Emphasizing foot placement, first step. Ex-Baseball, Stealing base mechanics.
Flexibility- ELDOA as well as Yoga/Tai chi like movements.
